Australian Red-tailed Black Cockatoos are one of my favourite birds. They are gregarious, noisy and often seen in large flocks, pairs or trios.
My painting of The Chaperone captures a peaceful snuggle moment shared between a loving pair whilst their guardian looks nonchalantly the other way. These birds are very wary of intruders.
The male Red-tailed Black Cockatoo possesses largely black plumage and scarlet panels in the tail. The females are more colourful with yellow heart like spots on the head, neck and wings and orange barring on the breast and under-tail.
Thank you to my friend and fabulous wildlife photographer Keith Lightbody for graciously providing the reference photo as inspiration for this oil painting.
