Painted in oils “Sir William” is an addition to my expanding collection of Australian Rosellas. The beauty and variation of colours these birds display is breath taking. How blessed we are to be able to share our backyards with these spectacular unique Australian birds.
“Sir William” is an adult male Crimson Rosella, sub species flaveolus – also sometimes referred to as a “Yellow Rosella”. Many people will argue that he is not a Crimson Rosella, that is because they are familiar with Crimson Rosellas being crimson red with some blue on their wings. But there are two types (super species) of Rosellas. One of these has blue cheek patches (Crimson Rosellas), while the other has predominantly white cheek patches. So to avoid arguments, it would be best to refer to this particular bird being a “Yellow type” Crimson Rosella sub species faveolus” This can be verified by referring to page 274 of The Australian Bird Guide (Peter Menkhorst et al).
Huge thank you and acknowledgement to photographer Bill Harding for graciously providing the reference photo used as inspiration for this painting. I would also like to thank Bill for clarifying the identity of “Sir William”.
