Being an Australian Realistic Birdlife Artist I am always looking to capture the beauty and character of each chosen subject.
This beautiful Boobook Owl has been on my creative to-do list for some time. Alert in the evening twilight and feigning hide and seek in the nook of the tree. It appears this beautiful Owl has been caught red handed taking a curious peek from behind the cover of a hiding spot.
When creating this painting I was in no doubt I needed to make the mesmerising emerald Boobook Owl eyes the focal point. I wanted to give the admirer the feeling of innocent curiosity caught by surprise in natural surroundings. The beautiful rustic colours of the plumage are true to the bird making the subject more spectacular.
The Boobook is the most common and smallest Australian Owl. Like may Australian birds, Boobooks build nests in hollow trees where they roost during the day and come out only at night to dine on insect and rodents.
Thank you Georgina Steytler for graciously allowing the use of photograph as a reference for this oil painting.
