Several years ago my husband and I spent many months touring Europe during the birdlife breeding season. Whilst visiting Scotland we met and fell in love with several colonies of these cute little birds. It is not very often that I paint a non Australia bird but in this instance I could not help myself, I just had to add one or maybe two Puffins to my bird art repertoire.
Some fun Puffin facts – they are small birds weighing just 0.5 kg. Due to their physical appearance, they are rightly known as cousins of penguin. Most of their life is spent at sea returning to shore to breed during which time their beak blooms into an outrageous orange colour earning Puffins the nickname “Sea Parrots” or “Clowns of the Sea”.
And the cutest – Baby Puffins are called Piffling’s.
Thank you to photographer Laura Storm for graciously providing the reference photo as inspiration for this painting.
