Painted in oils “Lady Beryl” is an addition to my expanding collection of Australian Rosellas. The beauty and variation of colours these birds display is breath taking. How blessed we are to be able to share our backyards with these spectacular unique Australian birds.
“Lady Beryl” is an adult female Crimson Rosella, The Adelaide Rosella (Platycercus adelaidae) endemic to South Australia. These beauties were thought to be a separate species, believed to have originated through the interbreeding of the Crimson and Yellow Rosellas.
The Adelaide Rosella averages 13.5 – 14.4 inches or 35 – 36 cm in length. Females are on average smaller and often suffused more with orange. The pale wing-stripe is occasionally present. They have smaller and narrower bills.
Huge thank you and acknowledgement to photographer Bill Harding for graciously providing the reference photo used as inspiration for this painting.
