My oil painting called “Chitty Chitty” is of a male Willy Wagtail. He is distinctive by his white eyebrow which is not just a fashion statement – it helps him attract a mate.
According to Australian folklore, the Willy Wagtail has played an important role as a symbol of loyalty, courage, and resourcefulness. They are also known to be the neighbourhood gossiper who eves drop on conversations.
It is no wonder Willy Wagtails are much loved regular sights in Australian gardens and parklands. Their name has been derived from their habit of waging their tails when foraging. Willy Wagtails are also known for their energetic movements, territorial behaviour and constant chatter which has given them the reputation of being the neighbourhood gossip’s.
Thank you to fabulous wildlife photographer Gail Yager for graciously providing the reference photo used as inspiration for this painting.
