The male Splendid Fairy Wren when dressed in his courtship suit is a very glitzy little bird who sings out to be painted and placed on display.
As an Australian birdlife artist it would be an oversight for me not to capture the beauty of this popular little guy in his majestic flirtation colours.
There is no false modesty attached to the Splendid Fairy Wren. The Male in breeding plumage shimmers in electric shades of violet blue, turquoise and pale blue with dramatic Zorro-like markings. The female remains a very un-splendid brown.
Native to Australia there are three different varieties of the Splendid Fairy Wrens. The species inhabits shrub lands and shrubby woodlands in arid and semi-arid locations. Where the varieties meet they breed with each other.
Thank you to wildlife photographer Keith Lightbody for graciously providing the reference photo for this painting. Keith also informed me that a Splendid Fairy Wren in full regalia consists of 15 shades of blue.
