Fergus — Tawny Frogmouth

Fergus is a wonderfully intriguing Tawny Frogmouth, with a cheeky expression that gives him plenty of personality. His sleepy, narrowed eyes are simply preparing him for the evening, when this nocturnal bird comes to life.

I especially loved painting his delicate whiskers and rich russet-red feathers, capturing the quiet and contemplative nature of this fascinating Australian bird.

Often mistaken for an owl, the Tawny Frogmouth is a master of camouflage and can almost disappear amongst the branches. In 2025, this much-loved Australian bird claimed the title of Australia’s Bird of the Year, after three previous runner-up finishes.

Fergus was a joy to paint, and I hope his distinctive character shines through.
