As an Australian Realistic Birdlife Artist I am always looking for interesting subjects to paint. Fergus definitely fits the bill when it comes to an interesting character. He has quite a devious look about him, but I did not want him to be mistaken as insidious. He is purely resting his eyelids whilst readying himself for the onset of evening twilight when he comes to life. Fergus is a nocturnal bird.
I loved painting Fergus, particularly his whiskers. We enjoyed many contemplative hours together whilst I endeavored to capture his demure character and played with the detail of his beautiful russet – red feathers (a second plumage colour which transpires).
Tawny Frogmouth is a species of birdlife native only to Australia. They are nocturnal and quite often mistaken for an owl. With narrowed eyelids, stretched neck and distinctive colouring, these birds hide inside the branches of trees and are the masters of camouflage.
